Stair railings - Maury and Williamson counties
Spring Hill straddles the Maury-Williamson county line and grew from 29,036 residents in 2010 to 50,005 in 2020. The Saturn plant opened there in 1990 and is now General Motors' Spring Hill Manufacturing. Most homes are in subdivisions built during that growth, and the city has been working through an update of its building codes in 2026.
Spring Hill had 23,462 residents in 2007, 29,036 in 2010, about 40,000 by 2018 and 50,005 at the 2020 census. The Saturn plant opened there in 1990, and the site is now General Motors' Spring Hill Manufacturing. Most of the housing is subdivision homes from that growth, on rolling former farmland along US-31 and the I-65 corridor, split between Maury and Williamson counties and two school systems. That makes the typical Spring Hill railing job a newer house: builder-grade spindles swapped for iron, an open-stair interior railing redone, a handrail added to a basement stair, or a back-deck stair railing on a yard that drops away from the house.
In April 2014 Spring Hill passed Ordinance 14-10, amending the 2012 residential code it then used so that only decks no larger than 9 square feet and no more than 30 inches above grade at any point were exempt from a permit. The model code's exemption covers unattached decks up to 200 square feet. Whether that 9-square-foot limit was carried into the city's later code adoptions has not been confirmed, so we treat Spring Hill deck and railing work as permit work until the Building Codes and Inspection Department says otherwise.
A May 2026 staff memo recommended updating Spring Hill's adopted construction codes, and the list of new local amendments in that memo covered garages, energy, insulation, condensate and pools, with nothing on guards or handrails. Because the update's final status was not confirmed, we check with Development Services at 8060 Station Hill Drive which edition your permit falls under before measuring. Neither Maury nor Williamson is a Home Improvement license county. From Rippavilla and the 1864 battlefield to the newer neighborhoods off the June Lake interchange, which opened in May 2024, we also handle porch railings and repairs.
